How to Earn Gift Cards for Christmas: Turn Receipts, Games & Cashback Into Holiday Gifts

I only share my actual experience where indicated. Rewards, eligibility, and redemption options vary by program. My balances reflect rewards accumulated over time and are not typical earnings guarantees.

Updated October 2026

Christmas is coming. Again.

I swear we just finished putting away last year’s decorations, and suddenly we’re supposed to be thinking about stocking stuffers, teacher gifts, and what to buy that nephew who responds to every question with “I don’t know.”

But what if some of those gifts were already sitting in your phone?

I’m not talking about taking out another credit card or signing up for a side hustle that requires three hours of work every night.

I’m talking about earning gift cards through things you’re already doing, like grocery shopping, buying gas, shopping online, and even playing games during your downtime.

And before you roll your eyes and think this is another one of those too-good-to-be-true internet promises, let me show you something.

Right now, here’s what I have accumulated across four rewards platforms:

Rewards programMy current balance
FetchOver $200
MyPoints$100
UpsideOver $25
Reco Social$25
TotalOver $350

That’s potentially fourteen $25 gifts.

Fourteen!

Now, did I earn all that last week while sitting on the couch eating potato chips? Absolutely not.

These rewards accumulated over time, and some activities earn considerably more than others.

But that’s exactly my point.

Small rewards can add up when you consistently collect them.

And with Christmas approaching, those balances could help cover gifts, stocking stuffers, or some of the other expenses that always seem to sneak up on us.

Here’s how you can start building your own Christmas gift-card stash.

1. Fetch: Turn Grocery Receipts Into Gift Cards

If you’re already grocery shopping, why not get something back?

Fetch is a rewards app that lets you earn points by submitting eligible shopping receipts. You can also earn additional points through special offers, eligible online purchases, and Fetch Play games.

Those points can eventually be redeemed for gift cards.

My current Fetch rewards balance is worth over $200.

That’s the largest balance in my rewards stash, and it’s a great example of why I don’t automatically ignore small rewards.

How to get started with Fetch

  1. Download Fetch and create an account.
  2. Submit eligible receipts from your everyday shopping.
  3. Check the app for bonus-point offers on products you already need.
  4. Explore Fetch Play if you enjoy mobile games.
  5. Save your points toward a gift card.

One thing I particularly like about the concept is that you don’t have to invent an entirely new activity to participate. You’re already buying groceries.

Just don’t start buying things you don’t need simply because an app is offering extra points. Spending $8 to earn 50 cents in rewards isn’t exactly winning at budgeting.

Christmas idea: Save your points toward a gift card for a teacher, teenager, or family member.

2. MyPoints: Get Rewarded for Shopping, Surveys, and Games

MyPoints is another program that offers multiple ways to earn rewards.

Depending on the offers available, you can earn points through eligible online shopping, surveys, games, and promotional activities.

You can redeem qualifying points for gift cards from participating retailers.

I currently have approximately $100 in MyPoints rewards.

If you’re already shopping online for Christmas, checking whether a purchase qualifies for rewards can be worthwhile.

How to use MyPoints

  1. Create a free account.
  2. Explore the available earning opportunities.
  3. Before shopping online, check whether the retailer has an eligible rewards offer.
  4. Complete surveys or game offers when they’re worth your time.
  5. Redeem available points for a gift card.

Here’s my rule: don’t spend 45 minutes earning pennies when you have better things to do.

Your time has value, too.

Christmas idea: Put your MyPoints rewards toward a gift card for someone on your list, or use them to offset your own holiday purchases.

3. Upside: Turn Everyday Purchases Into Holiday Money

Gas isn’t exactly an exciting purchase.

Nobody gets up in the morning thinking, “You know what would make today amazing? Spending $45 at the gas station.”

But if I’m buying gas anyway, I certainly don’t mind getting some money back.

Upside offers cashback opportunities at participating gas stations, restaurants, and grocery locations.

You claim an eligible offer, follow the purchase instructions, and receive cashback when the transaction qualifies.

You can withdraw eligible earnings through supported payment methods, including gift cards.

My current Upside balance is over $25.

How to use Upside

  1. Open the app before an eligible purchase.
  2. Compare nearby offers.
  3. Claim an offer and follow its instructions.
  4. Wait for the cashback to be credited.
  5. Cash out when you’re ready.

Just remember to compare the actual prices. A gas station offering cashback isn’t necessarily cheaper than the station down the street.

Christmas idea: Turn your gas cashback into a holiday gift card or put the money toward December expenses.

4. Reco Social: Another Rewards Balance in My Christmas Stash

I also have $25 accumulated through Reco Social.

This is another example of how smaller rewards from different platforms can contribute to one bigger goal.

Reco Social is a relatively new platform. Straight from the website – On Reco, everyone is a creator. If you know a great restaurant, a trail worth riding, a film nobody’s seen — you’re already one. Share it, and earn from every view, save, and click. No brand deals, no minimum following required.

Auto-linking: Reco finds every product, place, film, and game in your posts automatically

💸Earn from engagement: views, saves, and clicks all count — not just purchases

📈Start earning immediately: no follower minimums, no account requirements — just create and earn

You’ll get paid to talk about the games on RecoSocial that you play also. The earning potential is good here. I’m just getting started but happy with what I’ve made with the limited amount of time I’ve used it.

5. Can You Really Earn Gift Cards Just by Playing Games?

Yes, some rewards programs offer points for eligible mobile gaming activities.

Fetch Play, MyPoints and RecoSocial have gaming-related earning opportunities.

But here’s the part that sometimes gets left out of those exciting social media videos.

You generally need to complete specific requirements to qualify for rewards. Those might include reaching game levels, completing challenges, or meeting other offer conditions.

Not every game pays the same amount, and not every activity will be worth your time.

My advice?

If you already enjoy mobile games, explore the free earning opportunities and see whether they make sense for you.

But DO NOT spend money on in-app purchases just to chase rewards, and don’t assume you’ll earn a $25 gift card in one afternoon.

Think of gaming rewards as a little extra toward Christmas—not a replacement for your paycheck.

6. Try the $25 Christmas Gift Card Challenge

Here’s what I want you to do.

Pick one person on your Christmas list.

Maybe it’s your nephew, your child’s teacher, your sister, or that one relative who’s impossible to shop for.

Now set a goal to earn enough rewards for a $25 gift card.

That’s it.

You don’t need to earn $350.

You don’t need to download fifteen apps.

And you certainly don’t need to spend your entire weekend answering surveys.

Your challenge

  • Choose one gift-card recipient.
  • Pick one or two rewards programs.
  • Set a $25 goal.
  • Use qualifying everyday activities to build your balance.
  • Check your progress weekly.
  • Redeem early enough for Christmas.

If you reach your goal, fantastic.

If you earn $8 instead, that’s still $8 you may not have to take out of your regular holiday budget.

The important thing is to keep your expectations realistic.

7. A Few Things to Know Before Redeeming Rewards

Before you start planning which gift cards to give away, remember that rewards programs have rules.

Check the available retailers. Not every program offers every gift card, and reward options can change.

Look at the redemption requirements. Minimum balances, point values, and available denominations vary.

Allow time for processing. Some gift cards aren’t delivered instantly. Don’t wait until December 24 to redeem your rewards.

Don’t spend extra just to earn points. The goal is to save money, not create another expense.

Protect your accounts. Use official apps and websites, and be cautious of messages promising unusually large rewards.

And remember that your own earnings will depend on the activities you complete, the offers available, and how long you’ve been participating.

8. What If You Started Today?

Maybe you’ve never used a rewards app before.

Maybe you downloaded Fetch two years ago and forgot about it.

Or maybe you’re like me and have rewards accumulating across several different accounts.

Wherever you’re starting, the first step is the same:

See what you’ve already got.

Open your rewards apps. Check your balances. Look at your redemption options.

You might be pleasantly surprised.

And if you’re starting from zero, don’t get discouraged.

You don’t need to fund your entire Christmas shopping list with rewards.

One gift card is a perfectly good goal.

Final Thoughts: Make Your Phone Earn Its Keep

We spend enough time on our phones.

Scrolling. Shopping. Watching videos. Playing games. Looking up recipes we’re probably never going to make.

So if a few minutes of that time can help you earn something toward Christmas, why not?

I’m sitting on over $350 in accumulated rewards right now, and I’m going to share how I use these programs as we get closer to the holidays.

Not because I think everyone will earn the same amount.

But because I believe that every little bit of money you don’t have to pull out of your regular budget matters.

And if that means your nephew gets a $25 gift card funded by rewards you earned along the way?

I’d call that a win.
